int:net Summer School & Vienna Week of Interoperability

The int:net Summer School on Governance in Energy Interoperability, held from 23–27 June 2025 at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology in Vienna, marked an inspiring start to the Vienna Week of Interoperability — a week packed with learning, exchange, and collaboration on digital governance, interoperability, and innovation in the energy sector and beyond.

Days 1–3: Learning, Exploring, Connecting

On Day 1, participants from across Europe and beyond arrived at AIT to kick off the Summer School with an introduction to energy sector interoperability and governance by Prof. Antonello Monti and Thomas Strasser. The day continued with sessions on interoperability architectures and stakeholder frameworks, concluding with a lively get-together.

Day 2 featured deep dives into data spaces, interoperability management, and the societal dimension of the energy transition, enriched by interactive exercises on behavioural change strategies and engaging with citizens in the digital energy system. In the evening, Summer School participants joined the int:net Think Tank and Digital4Energy experts group at Wien Energie Spittelau for cross-sector dialogue.

Day 3 began with a visit to the AIT Energy Labs, followed by sessions on European interoperability testing facilities. Later, participants took part in the int:net Think Tank at Urban Innovation Vienna, contributing their fresh perspectives to discussions on governance and regulation for interoperability in the energy system.

Days 4–5: Cross-Sector Perspectives and Takeaways

On Day 4, the Summer School joined the 3rd Cross-sector Symposium on Interoperability at the Allianz Stadion. This unique event brought together experts from energy, healthcare, and public sectors to discuss how coordinated governance and structured testing can enable Europe’s digital transformation. The participants also experienced firsthand the interoperability testing environments of the IHE Connectathon and Energy Projectathon, a highlight of the week.

Finally, Day 5 wrapped up the Summer School with a workshop to reflect on the week’s learnings and draft recommendations - followed by an awards ceremony and farewell lunch.

Moving Forward

Throughout the week, participants gained insights into key concepts, emerging practices, and real-world applications of interoperability. They connected with experts and peers from diverse disciplines, reinforcing the importance of collaboration across sectors, generations, and countries in shaping a digital, interoperable, and sustainable energy future.

We thank all speakers, contributors, and attendees for making this week a true success — and we look forward to continuing this journey together.
